STILL STURDY AT THIRTY!
Thirty
years ago, a group of attorneys coalesced around the idea that the country needed someone in the civil justice system to fight for the underdog when he or she has been wronged by big business or big government, just as there were attorneys who serve the criminal justice system pro bono.
On that founding principle, Public Justice opened its doors on January 31, 1982, as "Trial Lawyers for Public Justice." In 2007, to mark our 25th anniversary, we took our current name to reflect a broadened mission -- to be a resource and gathering ground not only for plaintiffs' attorneys devoted to righting wrongs, but for the entire public interest community.
A lot has changed in 30 years. But, some things haven't.
Unnecessary court secrecy, class actions
bans
, mandatory arbitration abuse,
violations of workers' rights,
environmental
treachery
, infringements on civil rights and civil liberties -- the injustices that got us started in 1982 are still afoot.
In the three decades since our founding, Public Justice has fought to keep the courthouse doors open for ordinary people constitutionally entitled to their day in court. When corporations have cheated consumers; polluted the air and water; caused illness, injury or death to their own customers through neglect, misinformation or indifference;
or
flouted the "little guy's" rights and liberties, we've taken them to court to hold them accountable.
Trouble is, they keep going back to the drawing board, devising new ways to cheat and mistreat the public.
Unfortunately for them, we have a drawing board too. We're
still here and still fighting,
fortified by thousands
of smart, intrepid attorneys, dedicated to protecting the common good by holding wrongdoers accountable
when they violate individual rights and the public trust.
Naturally, we're proud to have reached the 30-year mark.
But, we're just getting started.
