The Tort
Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) of the American Bar Association
(ABA) presented Trial Lawyers for Public Justice
Executive Director Arthur H. Bryant with the Pursuit of Justice Award on August
8, 2003 during the ABA’s annual meeting at the San Francisco Marriott.
“This coveted award is bestowed only on
outstanding plaintiffs’ lawyers who actively demonstrate a commitment to
justice and access to the court system for all plaintiffs,” stated Diane
Abraham, Chair of the ABA’s Women & Minority Involvement Committee. “With
great pleasure, TIPS is happy to honor Arthur, who excels in promoting justice
and access to the courtroom.”
Arthur Bryant has been TLPJ’s Executive
Director since 1987 after joining TLPJ in 1984 as its sole staff attorney. In
his 19 years of service, he has won major victories and established new
precedents in several areas of the law, including constitutional law, toxic
torts, civil rights, consumer protection, and mass torts. Mr. Bryant has helped
build TLPJ into a nationally influential and successful public interest law
firm. Additionally, he has mobilized the trial bar and public interest advocates
to challenge several wide-ranging threats to individual rights in our system of
justice – launching special projects to counter unnecessary secrecy in the
courts, federal preemption of injury victims’ claims, mandatory arbitration
abuse, regressive changes to the Federal Rules, and class action abuse.
Mr. Bryant’s reason for his continued
dedication is summed up in his simple statement: “There are still large
injustices in the world that need to be fought, and the general market of
lawyers has a focus on making profits. Our focus is on doing justice.”
