Public Justice Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Review ‘New Prime, Inc. v. Oliveira’

Today, the Supreme Court granted certiorari to review the First Circuit’s decision in ‘New Prime, Inc. v. Oliveira.’ We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case both because we are hopeful the Court will see that the First Circuit correctly decided the case, but also because we believe the truck drivers who work for New Prime have been denied crucial rights under the wage and hour laws.

Transgender Rights – From Trump Tower to America’s Schools

President Trump, who appointed Jeff Sessions to lead the Justice Department, once famously said that Caitlyn Jenner – the Olympic gold medalist who recently came out as transgender – is welcome to use the women’s restroom at Trump Tower. That same standard of acceptance should apply to all transgender people, whether they are an Olympic champion, like Jenner, or a transgender student, like Gavin Grimm. Every person in this country should be able to live their lives, without fear of discrimination.

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms Privacy Rights in ‘Spokeo’ Decision

Corporations took a shot at gutting America’s privacy laws, and they missed. The U.S. Supreme has found that consumers can bring claims for statutory damages (where Congress says that if a corporation breaks some law, it must pay a fixed sum, even if the claims are hard to prove), even if the consumer has not lost money or suffered a personal injury. In doing so, they rejected several arguments from corporate America that would have closed the courthouse doors to consumers.
