Cort Carlson: Using the Law to Empower the Marginalized

Tycko & Zavareei LLP’s Public Interest Fellowship is an incredible opportunity for recent law graduates to gain hands-on experience in public interest law. This May, one of the firm’s current fellows, Cort Carlson, embarks upon the non-profit externship portion of his Fellowship with the Debtors’ Prison Project at DC-based non-profit, Public Justice.

A Passion for Public Service

Cort’s journey in public interest law began long before his fellowship. During his time at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, he completed a judicial externship, worked on whistleblower cases, and tackled unfair housing conditions. His commitment to serving the underrepresented also led him to advocate for incarcerated youth and research gun violence prevention.

Joining the Fight Against Debtors’ Prisons

For the non-profit placement portion of his fellowship, Cort will spend three months working with Public Justice’s Debtors’ Prison Project. This initiative combats the unjust practice of incarcerating individuals unable to pay court-imposed fines and fees, a system that disproportionately impacts low-income communities and people of color.

Public Justice’s mission resonates strongly with Cort’s values. The organization strives to dismantle abusive and discriminatory systems, fighting for a society where opportunities and outcomes are not dictated by race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or economic power.

Tycko & Zavareei LLP provides a prestigious 2-year public interest fellowship for recent law school graduates. Established in 2012, the Tycko & Zavareei LLP Public Interest Fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for promising young lawyers to gain hands-on experience alongside experienced litigators within the firm. Additionally, fellows spend approximately three months of their fellowship period working at renowned nonprofit organizations across the country.
