On Sept. 28, the Department of Education announced it will rescind 2024 Title IX rules that aimed to provide protections to students against sexual harassment, anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, and pregnancy discrimination. The decision officially reverts Title IX standards back to those in place prior to 2024, including 2020 rules from the first Trump administration that limited schools’ responsibilities to address sexual harassment.
Alexandra Brodsky, Litigation Director for Public Justice’s Students’ Civil Rights Project, said the following:
“The Trump administration refused to defend the 2024 Title IX regulations in court so it could do exactly this: return to its prior regulations without going through the proper administrative procedure to repeal a regulation. Student survivors, pregnant and parenting students, and LGBTQ+ students will pay the price.”
