Today, the Trump administration announced that the United States will no longer regulate pollution from coal- and gas-fired power plants that causes climate change. Dan Snyder, director of Public Justice’s Environmental Enforcement Project, said:
“The limitations on air pollution the Trump administration just axed were common sense — they saved lives, they saved money, and they were authorized under the Clean Air Act. Removing these pollution controls allows power plants to wreak havoc on our environment and brings the horrors of climate change that much closer to home for all Americans. This means the record-breaking heat and wildfires we’ve already seen will only get worse. The so-called ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ storms, flooding, fires, snow that we’ve witnessed will no longer be ‘once-in-a-lifetime,’ but more commonplace as substantial amounts of greenhouse gases are unleashed.
We are already in court challenging the Trump administration’s unlawful rescission of the Endangerment Finding with a citizen-led suit. We know firsthand — from this work and our decades of experience holding the coal industry accountable for the damage it has done to our country’s air and water — how important regulating the industry is and the very real impact it has on everyone’s quality of life, every single day. We will keep fighting to stop a government that can and will create irreversible damage to our planet and the very people they are supposed to serve.”
