Trumps Anti-Trans Athletics Executive Order, Explained

Trumps Anti-Trans Athletics Executive Order, Explained

This month, President Trump passed a new executive order, Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports, in an attempt to ban transgender girls from playing on girls’ sports teams. This order might seem like it upends or dismantles critical legal protections for LGBTQ+ students, but that power is a smokescreen. An executive order cannot undo students’ civil rights protections under the Constitution or Title IX. What this executive order does is try to use federal agencies to attack students and intimidate schools into violating the law.

Today, the Students’ Civil Rights Project released a new resource to help students and parents understand Trump’s anti-trans athletics ban. This order, and others like it, is a tool to target transgender students, impose sexist stereotypes into school settings, and create fear for students who dare to show up as their authentic selves. The first step to resisting this kind of intimidation is to resist misinformation. And if you believe your school might be violating your legal rights, we’ve got your back. Contact us here.
