Young v. Indiana High School Athletic Association

Young v. Indiana High School Athletic Association

Public Justice’s lawsuit on behalf of a 14-year-old Bloomington, Ind., girl, prompted the Executive Committee of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) to adopt an emergency rule, permitting girls to try out for their high school baseball teams.  Public Justice had charged that the previous rule, which prohibited high school girls from trying out for baseball if their school offered softball, violated both the U.S. Constitution and Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs.

The lawsuit was filed only after Public Justice informed the IHSAA that its rule violated the law and the IHSAA took no action for nine months.
