Take action: Trump nominates another climate change denier

President Donald Trump just nominated Sam Clovis, a Trump campaign adviser, to the USDA’s top science position. The funny (or terrifying) thing is: Clovis isn’t a scientist.

And Clovis takes it one step further than that: he doesn’t even really believe in climate science at all. He said there’s no “substantive information” supporting the idea of climate change, and that it’s “junk science.” Coming from a conservative talk-radio host who’s never taken a grad-school science class, it’s not surprising.

But the position that Trump nominated him for—the USDA’s undersecretary of research, education, and economics—is one of the most critical science and technology roles in the federal government. And under the 2008 Farm Bill, the post is supposed to be held by a “distinguished scientist.”

Call the Capitol switchboard now at (202) 224-3121 and tell your senators that Sam Clovis is unqualified for the job, and his nomination must be rejected.

We can stop Clovis from ever becoming one of the government’s top “scientists.” The nomination requires Senate confirmation, and even Republicans like Kansas Senator Pat Roberts have expressed skepticism that Clovis is fit for the role.

Any Senator can be convinced that this important post should be held by an accomplished scientist, and not by someone whose only qualification is his political favors to the Trump campaign. That’s why we’re asking you to call your Senator now and tell him/her that Clovis doesn’t belong anywhere near this position.

Do you want Sam Clovis to be responsible for ensuring the USDA’s scientists conform to “scientific integrity?” If he’s confirmed by the Senate, that will be his new job description.

We can’t let Trump get away with appointing another climate change denier, especially to a position like this one. Call your Senator at (202) 224-3121, and let’s send a message: our government’s science “experts” should actually believe in science.
