Public Justice’s Illuminating Injustice Award was designed to help those who have suffered a significant injury, but received only a partial recovery. The award is presented at the organization’s Gala in years when the Public Justice Foundation’s Communications & Marketing Committee identifies a particularly compelling case that highlights the barriers to justice at the heart of Public Justice’s mission and work.

Previous winners
The 2018 recipient was the family of Andrew Scott, who received the award at the Gala & Awards Dinner in July in Denver. Andrew was shot and killed in his own home by a Florida police officer who had mistaken his address for that of someone else parked in the housing complex. Andrew was awakened by intense knocking at 1:30am by officers who failed to announce themselves as police, and opened his door with his legally owned gun by his side. One of the four officers – Deputy Richard Sylvester – fired on Andrew six times, killing him. Andrew’s family filed suit against the officer, but the courts denied their claims under the doctrine of qualified immunity, placing the immunity of law enforcement above the individual rights of Andrew.
The purpose of this award is to highlight just one of the many clients our supporters have represented who suffered a catastrophic injury and for certain legal reasons were unable to get the just compensation they deserved. We hope to raise awareness of these types of unfortunate situations and help these injury victims with additional monetary relief.
