Statement on The Future of U.S. Department of Education Lawsuit to Restore Office for Civil Rights Staff

Statement on the U.S. Department of Education lawsuit to restore Office for Civil Rights Staff:

“Yesterday, we amended our lawsuit against the government’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights to bring the case as a class action. As part of our amended complaint, another family has also come forward to represent the thousands of students nationwide who need OCR’s help to learn on equal terms with their peers. The new complaint follows Congress’s affirmation, in a law passed in November, that the reduction in force should not proceed.

Even though the department itself has called the OCR employees back to work — because the agency knows it needs the staff to do its job — the administration continues its threats to fire them and dismantle OCR unless a court puts a stop to it. We are determined to keep fighting to preserve civil rights protections for students nationwide.”

Public Justice and Glenn Agre Bergman & Fuentes represent the plaintiffs.
